LOCAL STUDENTS LEARN FROM APES

Wednesday, 19 November 2008

Forty-two high school students in Hardin County attended a two-day program called The American Private Enterprise System, or better known as A.P.E.S.  Students from E-town High, Fort Knox, North Hardin, John Hardin, and Central Hardin High joined together to learn how America is organized to do business.  Local business and professional leaders were invited to speak on a variety of topics including corporations, cooperatives, legalities of business and diversity at school and the community.

APES committee chairperson, Patsy Whitehead, Nolin RECC, welcomed the students to the seminar, “During the next two days you will learn about various businesses and how they operate.  We will present ‘real life’ situations and ask you to work as a team in an effort to resolve these business issues.”  Whitehead, who has worked with the program for the past 21 years, says various businesses in Hardin County help to sponsor the seminar.  Whitehead credits these businesses with the success of the seminar:  AM Rotary Club, Clark Jewelers, Cecilian Bank, Coca-Cola of Elizabethtown, Magnolia Bank, Don Pierce & Associates, Fort Knox Federal Credit Union, First Citizens Bank, Nolin RECC, and the Cooperative Extension 4-H Council.

Guest speaker was former educator and LaRue County native Glen Rice.  His words of wisdom focused on students setting goals and achieving success.  He followed his presentation with inspirational music.

The A.P.E.S. program is not only educational but it is motivational and fun.  Six students will attend the State Youth Seminar at the University of Kentucky Campus this June as Hardin County Youth Delegates.  These students will attend because they achieved the highest test scores throughout the two-day seminar.  While in Lexington, they will compete for cash awards, college scholarships and a chance to attend the National Institute on Cooperative Education in Knoxville, TN.  They are (left to right) Ashley Doughty (John Hardin), Eddie Legaspi (John Hardin), Mike Taylor (Fort Knox), Maggie Mattingly (John Hardin), Tina Cota-Robles (Fort Knox), and Caleb Givan (Central Hardin).

Prizes and awards presented during the seminar include:  “Outstanding Participant Awards” Tina Cota-Robles and Eddie Legaspi.  “People’s Choice Award” was presented to Eddie Legaspi.

Taking home new learning experiences as well the seminar’s mascot, was Karissa Jackson from Fort Knox High School.  Each year a souvenir APE is given to one student at the seminar.

The APES program is successful because high school counselors and committee members work together to accomplish a great two-day business and economic seminar.  They include Patsy Whitehead (chair), Tara Graziano (vice chair), Lisa Mudd, Scott Curley, JoLynn Shipp, Alan Campbell, Ken Adams, Bill Hay, Gail Dunkelberger, Rik Hawkins, Carol Perkins, and Hardin County 4-H Youth Development Agent Marla Stillwell.

This youth program depends largely upon outstanding speakers who volunteer their time to teach local students.  Volunteers this year were John J. Scott, Kelly Meredith, Tim Goblirsch, Rik Hawkins, Michael Coyle, Glen Rice, and Patsy Whitehead.

Clark Jeweler’s has traditionally donated watches to the outstanding young male and female participants of APES.  This year is no exception.  A special thank you goes to Clark Jeweler’s from two remarkable young students, Eddie Legaspi and Tina Cota-Robles.

Teresa 1986

Teresa 1986

I took this photo sometime in the late summer or early fall of 1986 while on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson.  At least that is my best guess.

Teresa just finished her Bachelor’s of Arts in Sociology from Judson College in Marion, Alabama.  We met on August 30, 1985 at Judson during a Christian concert.  I was going to Marion Military Institute (MMI), a 2-year college, two blocks away. I was in my second year and Teresa was a senior (she is older than me).

She came to Tucson with me after I graduated from MMI in May of 1986.  We lived at my Grandmother’s house for a couple of weeks until she kicked us out. We rented a small one bedroom apartment, I got a job at a local TV station and she got a cat. We got married on October 5th, 1986.

Lost Ring and Mad Boss

Tuesday, 18 November 2008

I can’t find my wedding ring.  I’m sure I had it this morning.  It was a cold morning, only 28°. I think the ring got stuck in my glove and came off when I took my gloves off.  You know your hands shrink in the winter for some reason and my ring was loose. I now have to start re-tracing all of my steps to see if I can find it. This isn’t a picture of my ring, but it’s about what my ring looked like. Teresa wants to trade her ring in for a setting in white gold.  I suppose that if I can’t find my ring, this may be an option.  I’ve had that dang thing for 22 years and I am quite mad that I can’t find it.

Last night I wanted to spend time with Sean, so I asked him if he wanted to go eat dinner. We decided to go to Hooters in Louisville. He asked if he could bring one of his friends. It turns out that his friend is my boss’ son. I asked Sean’s friend if his parents knew where we were going for dinner. He said they knew that we were going out to eat, but he didn’t tell them where. I’m starting to think that his mom might be a little mad at me for taking her son to Hooters. To make matters worse, he didn’t finish his dinner so he asked for a to-go box. Of course the to-go box had the Hooters logo all over it. I asked if they had any plain to-go boxes… they didn’t.  Then to make matters even more worse, the boys took pictures of the Hooters girl that served us. So now I’m thinking I’m totally in the dog house with my boss and his wife. I guess time will tell.

EDIT: I found my ring, so I only have to worry about my boss and his wife.

Musings 2

Monday, 17 November 2008

Here are some more random thoughts on American Christianity. Once I can articulate this better, I will pull these thoughts into a logical and coherent structure… at least that is the goal.

We’re going to join Southeast Christian Church.  We like the teaching and there is potential to get to know some folks. I want to volunteer in the Usher Ministry and the Children’s Ministry (to work in Katherine’s class). I also want to join a bible study.

The four false teachers: the Legislator (imposing extra-biblical rules); the Superstar (this is the word of God that I received for you – buy my sermon series to hear it); the Salesman (don’t worry about the Cross, become a Christian and you will have health and wealth); and the Motivational Speaker (make yourself better, no need for Jesus or the Cross).

Why do we go to Church? My oldest daughter has decided that she doesn’t believe in Church or the Bible any more. I’m like, “WTF???”. [Actually, that was a joke ‘cause I don’t cuss in my blog and have cut way back in cussing at work. According to the Bible, you're not supposed to cuss, so I'm working on that.] We go to church because Christianity cannot exist without community. We go to church to be encourage and to encourage others to walk by faith. We go to church because the early Christians gathered together on Sundays (the first day of the week, the day of the resurrection), to celebrate the resurrection and partake in communion (as a community of believers).

The Unit & The Boys

Sunday, 16 November 2008

I started watching The Unit when I was in Georgia for two months.  It’s kinda silly, but enjoyable.  Last weekend, we watched part one of a two-part episode.  Now Teresa and Katherine are hooked.

The Sergeant-Major’s daughter was kidnapped and taken to Syria.  She was about to lose her head when The Unit busted in on the terrorists and killed them and rescued the daughter.

Apparently, in The Unit, it’s a capital offense to sleep with a team member’s wife. COL Ryan was having an affair with one of the sergeants in The Unit. The Sergeant-Major wouldn’t let the violated sergeant kill the COL until the whole unit voted.  They went through four or five episodes and then came back to this plot line.  They voted to kill the COL, but then the Sergeant-Major’s daughter got herself kidnapped. So, the execution was on hold until they rescued the daughter.  Like I said, it was kinda silly.

The COWBOYS (6-4) won tonight against the REDSKINS (6-4) 14-10 in Washington.  I was shocked.  I watched the first few minutes of the game.  Dallas received the kickoff, went 3 and out.  Washington got the ball and scored (0-7).  Dallas received another kickoff, Romo threw and interception and I changed the channel.

Quantum of Solace

Friday, 14 November 2008

This was a great action movie.  I said, “wow” after almost every action scene.  They were well choreographed and executed.  I couldn’t tell where the live action ended and the CGI began.

This wasn’t a great James Bond movie.  I like the new Bond, but he’s not as suave as the others.  There weren’t any great lines, this Bond hardly spoke at all. The Bond girls were forgettable… no Pussy Galore, Honey Ryder or Xenia Onatopp. Strawberry Fields got close, but she was a slippery character.

I’m glad I spent the money to see this in a theater because the action scenes were really awesome.  As far as the Bond storyline, it fell a little flat.

Musings 1

Thursday, 13 November 2008

I’ve been reflecting on my life as an American Christian which has led me to some interesting books.

First my thoughts on our blend of Christianity.  I’m not sure what I’d call myself anymore.  I grew up Catholic and grew-up again Charismatic/Pentecostal. What I’m really trying to do right now is find a way to explain all of this.  This is something that both Teresa and I have been grappling with for sometime.  I don’t quite know how to express it.

Eva Berlin

Sunday, 09 November 2008

We’re at my brother’s house in North Carolina for the long Veteran’s Day weekend.  I wanted to see my new niece, Eva Berlin… she was born on the Fiscal New Year (01 OCT 2008)… Anyhow, we’re just about to leave to go do something fun… there is only so much Wii Guitar Hero and Wii Sports one can take before it gets old…

The older kids are going on a tour of Wake Forest on Monday… it’s super expensive, so if they don’t get scholarships, they may be going to community college…

Shark Bait
